What is Iyengar Yoga?

In 1952, B.K.S Iyengar started to teach famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin. Having recognised the profound benefits of yoga, Yehudi later invited him to teach in the West.

B.K.S Iyengar made yoga accessible to everyone. He introduced the use of bricks, blocks and belts to help people achieve the classical asana and to help them stay in the posture to experience the benefits.

Guruji devoted his whole life to studying the science and art of yoga. He published many books including the well known,’Light on Yoga’, ‘Light on Pranayama’ and my favourite,’Light on life’.

Iyengar yoga has a therapeutic affect on all systems of the body. The body is strengthened and the mind becomes clearer. Some classes can be energising others calming.

All Iyengar yoga teachers undergo a rigorous programme of training and are assessed on their own practice as well as their teaching.

What to expect from your class

  • Clear demonstrations

  • Specific action instructions

  • Good Sequencing

  • Precision & Alignment focus

  • Held postures

  • Use of props

  • Individual correction & adjustment in a posture

In an Iyengar yoga class, the postures are demonstrated and an action is given to help improve the alignment of the posture. The posture may be repeated a few times. The class is planned with a particular sequence of postures that progress from one to another. There is a varied set of postures and breathing exercises each week.

As the student develops their awareness of their asanas, they can then begin to experience the more subtle layers of the body, penetrating their consciousness inwards towards the spiritual self. The practice becomes a ‘Meditation in Action’.
